Abstract

The phenomenon of dating relationships among Generation Z indicates that interpersonal communication does not always develop in a healthy manner. In some cases, unbalanced communication may lead to a toxic relationship, characterized by the dominance of one partner, emotional control, and a lack of openness. This condition may result in emotional impacts such as fear, anxiety, and psychological exhaustion. This study aims to examine and describe interpersonal communication in toxic relationships among Generation Z, including the communication characteristics, how informants identify toxic dynamics, and the efforts made to improve communication. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method, based on interpersonal communication theory and supported by attachment theory and emotional dependency. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants aged 21–23 years, consisting of students and workers who had experienced unhealthy dating relationships. The findings show that interpersonal communication in toxic relationships is marked by unequal communication, partner dominance, limited openness, and responses that tend to dismiss feelings. Most informants did not immediately realize that the relationship was unhealthy due to emotional attachment and the duration of the relationship; however, awareness began to emerge when communication repeatedly caused emotional distress. Efforts to improve communication were carried out through discussions and expressing feelings, but were often ineffective due to inconsistent changes from the partner. This study concludes that toxic relationships among Generation Z are influenced by unhealthy interpersonal communication and reinforced by emotional dependency, making it difficult for individuals to leave the relationship. Keywords: Interpersonal Communication, Toxic Relationship, Generation Z, Attachment Theory, Emotional Dependency.
