Abstract
The phenomenon of cancel culture has increasingly functioned as a form of social sanction that affects both the public reception of a film and the image of public figures involved. This study is motivated by the emergence of public backlash on social media triggered by controversial statements made by the lead actor of the film remake Business Proposal, Abidzar Al-Ghifari. His statements during the film’s promotional activities were perceived by the public as showing a lack of respect toward the values of the original work. These reactions became contributing factors to the negative public reception of the film as a tangible impact of cancel culture. This research draws upon six relevant previous studies as a theoretical foundation for understanding the phenomenon under investigation. The study employs Stuart Hall’s encoding–decoding reception analysis to examine how audiences interpret the controversy surrounding the actor and its impact on the reception of the film remake Business Proposal. The purpose of this study is to explore audience reception of cancel culture in the context of the film remake Business Proposal. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative method with a reception analysis approach based on Stuart Hall’s framework and a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through indepth interviews with five informants who are fans of Korean dramas and are familiar with the development of the cancel culture phenomenon surrounding the film. The findings show that although informants held different reception positions toward the controversy surrounding the lead actor, most audiences were positioned within a dominant-hegemonic reading. Cancel culture was understood as a logical consequence of the actor’s behavior, which contributed to a decline in audience interest in the film remake Business Proposal. The conclusion of this study indicates that cancel culture operates as a form of social sanction in the digital space that has a direct impact on the reception of the film remake Business Proposal. These findings highlight the importance of maintaining ethical public communication and managing reputation, particularly for actors and production houses involved in film adaptations with high audience expectations.
