Abstract

Social media Instagram, has become a central space for Generation Z to build social interactions, express themselves, and construct digital identities. However, the high level of connectivity and the presence of diverse audiences within a single account often generate social tension known as context collapse. This condition encourages some users to manage multiple social media accounts. This study aims to understand the motives and subjective experiences of Generation Z in using multiple Instagram accounts as a strategy for identity management and the avoidance of context collapse. This research employs a qualitative approach using Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological method within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five Generation Z informants who actively use more than one Instagram account. The findings indicate that the use of multiple accounts is rooted in past experiences of discomfort on main accounts, such as family surveillance, fear of misinterpretation, representational pressure, and the convergence of audiences with different social backgrounds. These experiences subsequently shape the informants’ goals to create safer digital spaces, maintain privacy, selectively control audiences, and separate public and personal personas. The use of multiple accounts also functions as a mechanism of social boundary management to mitigate the effects of context collapse, including audience flattening, instability of meaning, time distortion, and conflicting platform purposes. The study concludes that the use of multiple accounts among Generation Z is not merely a technical practice, but an adaptive strategy emerging from the interaction of subjective experiences, intersubjective relations, and the characteristics of social media as new media. This practice enables Generation Z to maintain identity stability, digital autonomy, and psychological well-being amid the increasingly fluid and representationally demanding digital environment. Namun, keterhubungan yang tinggi dan beragamnya audiens dalam satu akun sering kali menimbulkan ketegangan sosial yang dikenal sebagai context collapse. Kondisi ini mendorong sebagian pengguna untuk mengelola lebih dari satu akun media sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami motif dan pengalaman subjektif Generasi Z dalam menggunakan multi akun di media sosial Instagram sebagai strategi pengelolaan identitas dan penghindaran context collapse. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif melalui metode fenomenologi Alfred Schutz dengan paradigma konstruktivisme. Data diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap lima informan Generasi Z yang aktif menggunakan lebih dari satu akun Instagram. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan multi akun berakar pada pengalaman masa lalu berupa ketidaknyamanan di akun utama, seperti pengawasan keluarga, kekhawatiran disalahpahami, tekanan representasi diri, serta bercampurnya audiens dengan latar sosial yang berbeda. Pengalaman tersebut kemudian mengarahkan informan pada tujuan untuk menciptakan ruang digital yang lebih aman, menjaga privasi, mengendalikan audiens secara selektif, serta memisahkan persona publik dan persona personal. Penggunaan multi akun juga berfungsi sebagai mekanisme pengelolaan batas sosial untuk menghindari dampak context collapse, yang meliputi pemerataan audiens, ketidakstabilan makna, distorsi waktu, dan benturan tujuan penggunaan platform. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan multi akun oleh Generasi Z bukan sekadar praktik teknis, melainkan strategi adaptif yang lahir dari kombinasi pengalaman subjektif, relasi intersubjektif, dan karakteristik media sosial sebagai media baru. Praktik multi akun memungkinkan Generasi Z menjaga stabilitas identitas, otonomi digital, serta kesejahteraan psikologis di tengah kompleksitas ruang digital yang semakin cair dan penuh tuntutan representasional.
