Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of father loss on the self-image development of students at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Mercu Buana University, with reference to Bowlby's attachment theory and Rogers' concept of self-image. The high incidence of fatherlessness in Indonesia places students in a vulnerable position because they are in the phase of identity formation and independence. This study used a quantitative approach with purposive sampling techniques, involving 93 respondents who met the criteria of losing their fathers due to divorce, death, or emotional absence. Data were collected through a Likert scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed using Spearman's correlation test and the coefficient of determination to see the relationship between the loss of a father and self-image. The results showed that the loss of a father figure had a significant influence on the development of students' self-image. Based on the Spearman correlation test, a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.543 was obtained, indicating a strong and positive relationship between the loss of a father and the development of self-image, where the greater the experience of losing a father, the greater the impact on their self-image. A significance value of 0.001, which is less than 0.05, reinforces this finding, so that the relationship is statistically significant. In addition, a coefficient of determination of 29.48% shows that the loss of a father contributes to self-image, while the remaining 70.52% is influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study. These findings confirm that the loss of a father figure has a direct impact on students' self-perception, self-confidence, self-acceptance, and social relationships. Thus, it can be concluded that the presence of a father figure plays a very important role in the process of forming an individual's psychological identity in young adulthood. Keywords: fatherless, loss of father, self-image, college students, identity Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis pengaruh kehilangan sosok ayah terhadap perkembangan citra diri mahasiswa Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Mercu Buana dengan mengacu pada teori keterikatan Bowlby dan konsep citra diri Rogers. Fenomena fatherless yang tinggi di Indonesia menempatkan mahasiswa sebagai kelompok rentan karena berada pada fase pembentukan identitas dan kemandirian. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan teknik purposive sampling, melibatkan 93 responden yang memenuhi kriteria kehilangan ayah akibat perceraian, kematian, atau ketidakhadiran emosional. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner skala Likert yang telah diuji validitas dan reliabilitas, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji korelasi Spearman dan koefisien determinasi untuk melihat hubungan antara kehilangan ayah dan citra diri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kehilangan sosok ayah memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap perkembangan citra diri mahasiswa. Berdasarkan uji korelasi Spearman diperoleh nilai koefisien korelasi (r) sebesar 0,543 yang mengindikasikan adanya hubungan kuat dan positif antara kehilangan ayah dengan perkembangan citra diri, di mana semakin besar pengalaman kehilangan ayah yang dialami individu, semakin besar pula dampaknya terhadap citra diri mereka. Nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,001 yang lebih kecil dari 0,05 memperkuat temuan ini, sehingga hubungan tersebut dinyatakan signifikan secara statistik. Selain itu, koefisien determinasi sebesar 29,48% menunjukkan bahwa kehilangan ayah memberikan kontribusi, sementara 70,52% sisanya dipengaruhi oleh faktor lain di luar penelitian. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa kehilangan figur ayah berdampak langsung pada aspek persepsi diri, kepercayaan diri, penerimaan diri, dan hubungan sosial mahasiswa. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa keberadaan figur ayah memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam proses pembentukan identitas psikologis individu pada masa dewasa muda.
