Abstract
Piping system is one of the methods used to distribute fluids from one place to another according to the piping system installation. Piping systems usually use two types of materials, namely metal and non-metal. In metal piping systems, the problem that often occurs is corrosion. Corrosion problems occur in the petrochemical industry, there is a caustic soda liquid distribution pipeline that has been used since 1995 and has never been replaced. The pipe material used in the pipeline is carbon steel. To prevent continued quality decline, it is necessary to replace it with a more suitable material. This study aims to analyze the corrosion rate of ASTM A106 carbon steel pipes and 304 stainless steel pipes against caustic soda (NaOH) solution using the weight loss method. Test samples were made measuring 2 cm × 6 cm and then immersed in a caustic soda solution (NaOH 48%) in time variations of 120 hours, 360 hours, and 504 hours. The results of the corrosion rate test in this test include, among others, at 120 hours the carbon steel material has a corrosion rate of 0.012 mm/year while for the stainless steel material it has a corrosion rate of 0.0037 mm/year. Then, in data collection at 360 hours, the results of the corrosion rate of the carbon steel material are 0.013 mm/year while the stainless steel gets the results of 0.0049 mm/year. For the last data collection at 504 hours, the results of the corrosion rate of the carbon steel material are 0.0149 mm/year while for the stainless steel material the results are 0.0064 mm/year. Keywords: Corrosion, Carbon steel, Stainless steel, Weight loss Sistem perpipaan yaitu salah satu cara yang digunakan untuk mendistribusikan fluida dari suatu tempat ke tempat yang lain sesuai dengan instalasi sistem perpipaan. Sistem perpipaan biasanya menggunakan dua tipe material yaitu metal dan non metal. Pada sistem perpipaan metal permasalahan yang sering terjadi adalah korosi. Permasalahan korosi terjadi di industri bidang Petrochemical terdapat sebuah saluran pipa distribusi caustic soda liquid yang sudah digunakan sejak 1995 dan belum pernah dilakukan penggantian. Material pipa yang digunakan pada saluran pipa tersebut adalah carbon steel. Agar penurunan kualitas tidak terus terjadi perlu dilakukan penggantian material yang lebih sesuai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis laju korosi pada pipa carbon steel ASTM A106 dan pipa stainless steel 304 terhadap larutan caustic soda (NaOH) menggunakan metode weight loss. Sampel uji dibuat berukuran 2 cm × 6 cm kemudian dimasukkan dalam larutan caustic soda (NaOH 48%) dalam variasi waktu 120 jam, 360 jam, dan 504 jam. Hasil pengujian laju korosi pada pengujian ini antara lain pada 120 jam material carbon steel memiliki laju korosi 0,012 mm/tahun sedangkan untuk material stainless steel memiliki laju korosi 0,0037 mm/tahun. Kemudian pada pengambilan data pada 360 jam didapatkan hasil laju korosi material carbon steel 0,013 mm/tahun sedangkan stainless steel mendapatkan hasil 0,0049 mm/tahun. Untuk pengambilan data terakhir pada 504 jam didapatkan hasil laju korosi material carbon steel senilai 0,0149 mm/tahun sedangkan untuk material stainless steel mendapatkan hasil 0,0064 mm/tahun.
