Abstract
This study aims to determine the relationship between self-talk and academic stress among students working at the University of Jakarta. Self-talk is broadly defined as self-directed guidance or talking to oneself, either directly or internally, which allows for the organization of various behavioral functions and forms of self-regulation within oneself. This research uses a correlational quantitative approach involving 208 students who study while working at various universities in the Jakarta area. The instruments used include the Student Life Stress Inventory (SLSI) to measure academic stress and the Self Talk Scale (STS) to measure self-talk. Data analysis was performed using the non-parametric statistical technique Spearman’s rho because the data were not normally distributed. Data analysis was conducted using the non-parametric statistical technique Spearman’s rho because the data did not have a normal distribution. The results of the study indicate a significant and positive relationship between self-talk and academic stress in students who work while pursuing their education at universities in Jakarta. (r = 0.560, p < 0.05). This means that the higher the self-talk, the higher the level of academic stress experienced by the students. Additionally, no significant differences were found in self-talk or academic stress based on gender and semester level.
