Abstract

This research focuses on improving the reliability and efficiency of computer networks by implementing a failover and load balancing mechanism using Mikrotik routers. The study was conducted in a real network environment managed by a Managed Service Provider (MSP) client, where two Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were available: a primary ISP with 20 Mbps bandwidth and a backup ISP with 10 Mbps. Initially, the network relied solely on the primary ISP, resulting in bandwidth congestion and total service disruption during link failures due to the absence of an automatic failover system. To address these issues, a static routing method was applied, incorporating recursive gateway for failover and address list configuration for load balancing. The system was designed using the Network Development Life Cycle (NDLC) methodology, consisting of analysis, design, prototyping, implementation, monitoring, and management phases.Testing results show that the failover mechanism successfully reroutes traffic to the backup ISP during a failure of the primary link and automatically restores the route once the primary connection is active again. Load balancing implementation effectively distributes traffic between the two ISPs based on client IP address groups, reducing congestion and maximizing bandwidth usage.Monitoring via PRTG and Winbox confirmed improved traffic distribution and service continuity. These findings indicate that the implemented system significantly enhances network availability, reduces downtime, and ensures better resource utilization in small to medium-scale network environments.
