Abstract
The eyewear lens industry faces significant challenges in maintaining high product quality while ensuring efficient production processes. One of the primary issues encountered is the high level of particle defects, which can impact optical quality and customer satisfaction. PT. XYZ, a leading manufacturer of eyewear lenses, experienced a particle defect rate of up to 12% in the Line 1 UV Coater process, significantly affecting production costs and operational efficiency. To address this issue, this study utilized the Six Sigma approach with the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) method to reduce particle defects and improve product quality. The approach began by measuring the Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) and Sigma level before and after improvements, as well as analyzing the root causes of defects, including work methods, environmental conditions, and machine performance. The findings showed a reduction in DPMO from 112,801 to 46,782 and an increase in the Sigma level from 2.71 to 3.18, indicating a significant improvement in process quality. A total of 11 improvement initiatives were implemented, including the installation of Antistatic Blowers and optimization of the filtration system, which successfully reduced the defect rate from 12% to 4.7%. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Six Sigma in enhancing product quality and production efficiency. Additionally, the implementation of this strategy contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), by improving production efficiency and reducing industrial waste. Consequently, the findings provide strategic insights for PT. XYZ and the manufacturing industry as a whole in optimizing quality and operational sustainability.
