Abstract

Motorcycle engine blocks are critical components that significantly influence engine performance and durability. This study aims to analyze the differences in the mechanical properties and microstructure of local and imported motorcycle engine blocks. The research involved hardness testing to assess mechanical properties and microstructure analysis using a metallurgical microscope. The tested samples consisted of local and imported engine blocks with comparable engine capacities. The results indicated that imported engine blocks had an average hardness of 15.6 HRC, which was higher than the 9.5 HRC observed in local engine blocks. The microstructure of the imported materials showed a more homogeneous distribution of pearlite, while the local materials were predominantly ferrite. The higher hardness of the imported engine blocks contributed to superior resistance against friction and wear, crucial for operations under demanding conditions. This study offers valuable insights for enhancing the competitiveness of local engine block materials in the global market. Recommendations include improving material quality through innovations in manufacturing processes and heat treatment. Keywords: Mechanical properties, microstructure, motorcycle engine block.
