Abstract

Hardness profile and microstructure studies have been conducted on low carbon steel materials for the application of hot cell conveyor chains in nuclear power plants after receiving Plasma Nitrocarburizing treatment. The material in the hot cell conveyor chain itself is low carbon steel. The conveyor chain itself is used to transfer nuclear material from one cell to another cell. In this process friction occurs between the chain and gear which results in wear. Material for the conveyor chain itself must have high wear resistance, strong and durable. To improve the quality of low carbon steel material to be resistant to wear can be done by hardening the metal surface. To test the success of the surface on low carbon steel with nitrocarburizing time varied starting from 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours for the nitrocarburizing process at 4000C. Observations made on the processed material are hardness testing with Vickers Hardness Tester, microstructure using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results show that, the level of hardness of the material after nitrocarburizing surface hardening shows that the longer the time the higher the surface hardness and automatically the higher wear resistance. The hardness of the material before surface hardening is 118.40 HV and the hardness of the material after being treated surface hardening with a temperature of 4000C at 5 hours which is 287.79 HV. Keywords: Plasma, Nitrocarburizing, Low Carbon Steel, SA 36 Steel, Chain, Hardness, Transfer Case in Hot Cell Telah dilakukan study profil kekerasan dan mikrostruktur pada bahan material low carbon steel untuk aplikasi rantai conveyor hot cell di PLTN setelah mendapat perlakuan Plasma Nitrocarburizing. Bahan pada rantai conveyor hot cell sendiri adalah bahan baja carbon rendah atau low carbon steel. Rantai conveyor itu sendiri digunakan untuk mentransfer bahan nuklir dari cell satu ke cell lain. Dalam proses ini terjadi gesekan antara rantai dan gear yang mengakibatkan aus. Bahan untuk rantai conveyor sendiri harus memiliki daya tahan aus yang tinggi, kuat, dan tahan lama. Untuk meningkatan kualitas bahan low carbon steel agar tahan aus dapat dilakukan dengan pengerasan permukaan logam. Untuk menguji keberhasilan permukaan pada low carbon steel dengan waktu nitrocarburizing divariasi mulai dari 1 jam, 2 jam, 3 jam, 4 jam, 5 jam untuk proses nitrocarburizing pada temperature 4000C. Pengamatan yang dilakukan pada material yang diolah adalah pengujian kekerasan dengan Vickers Hardness Tester, struktur mikro menggunakan Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa, Tingkat kekerasan material setelah di surface hardening nitrocarburizing menunjukkan bahwa semakin lama waktu surface hardening maka kekerasan permukaan semakin tinggi dan otomatis ketahanan aus juga semakin tinggi. Kekerasan material sebelum di surface hardening sebesar 118,40 HV dan kekerasan material setelah di beri perlakuan surface hardening dengan temperature 4000C pada waktu 5 jam yang adalah 287,79 HV.
