Abstract

Valve failures pose a significant risk in the offshore oil and gas industry, with serious consequences such as asset losses, production reduction due to facility shutdowns, health and safety issues, and environmental impacts like oil and gas spills and environmental contamination. Various types of valve failures have occurred in the offshore industry in Norway, caused by factors such as improper material selection, corrosion, mechanical failures due to high pressure and loads, and inadequate coatings. This study aims to evaluate the coating approach on valves by focusing on the initial surface preparation through the sandblasting process. We investigated and analyzed the effects of using abrasive media Garnet mesh 30-60 and Aluminium Oxide Grade C on the adhesive strength of ASTM A105 material. The research involved the use of test plates that underwent sandblasting at Sa3 cleanliness level. Subsequently, the test plates underwent similar treatments, including measuring surface roughness values using a digital profile gauge, soluble salt testing using the bresle method, measuring coating thickness using dry film thickness, and adhesive strength testing using the pull-off test method. The pull-off test results revealed that test specimen 1 with Garnet sand, at Sa3 cleanliness level with a surface roughness value of 67 μm, exhibited an adhesive strength of 8.8 MPa. Meanwhile, test specimen 2 with Aluminium Oxide sand, at Sa3 cleanliness level with a surface roughness value of 72 μm, demonstrated an adhesive strength of 9.3 MPa. Kegagalan katup adalah risiko besar di industri minyak dan gas di lepas pantai, dengan konsekuensi serius seperti kerugian aset, penurunan produksi akibat penutupan fasilitas, masalah kesehatan, keselamatan, dan dampak lingkungan seperti tumpahan minyak dan gas serta pencemaran lingkungan. Berbagai jenis kegagalan katup telah terjadi di industri lepas pantai Norwegia, disebabkan oleh berbagai faktor seperti pemilihan material yang tidak tepat, korosi, kegagalan mekanis akibat tekanan dan beban tinggi, serta kurangnya lapisan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pendekatan pelapisan pada katup dengan memfokuskan pada persiapan permukaan awal melalui proses sandblasting. Kami menggunakan dan menganalisis pengaruh penggunaan media abrasif Garnet mesh 30-60 dan Aluminium Oxide Grade C terhadap kekuatan perekat pada material ASTM A105. Penelitian ini melibatkan penggunaan pelat uji yang telah menjalani proses sandblasting pada tingkat kebersihan Sa3. Setelah itu, pelat uji tersebut menjalani perlakuan serupa, termasuk pengukuran nilai kekasaran permukaan menggunakan digital profile gauge, pengujian soluble salt dengan metode bresle, pengukuran ketebalan lapisan dengan menggunakan dry film thickness, dan pengujian kekuatan perekat menggunakan metode uji tarik (pull-off test). Hasil pull-off test menunjukkan bahwa spesimen uji 1 dengan pasir Garnet, pada tingkat kebersihan Sa3 dengan nilai kekasaran permukaan sebesar 67 μm, memiliki kekuatan perekat sebesar 8.8 MPa. Sementara itu, spesimen uji 2 dengan pasir Aluminium Oxide, pada tingkat kebersihan Sa3 dengan nilai kekasaran permukaan sebesar 72 μm, memiliki kekuatan perekat sebesar 9.3 MPa.
