Abstract

So far, natural fibers, especially corn silk, have not been widely used in the industrial world. In fact, lately scientists are paying more attention to environmentally friendly composite materials. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the feasibility of corn fiber composites with polyester and epoxy matrices. This study aims to calculate the maximum shear stress and maximum shear strain of corn fiber composites with polyester and epoxy matrices by carrying out torsion tests on several different volume fractions. This study will use volume fractions of 0,15; 0,20; 0,25; and 0,30 corn fiber with a matrix of polyester and epoxy. The printed composite is then dried for 1 day, then the torsion test is carried out. The test results showed that pure resin and pure polyester had the lowest maximum shear strength of 4.07 MPa and 2.93 MPa. Specimens with a fiber volume fraction of 0,25 epoxy matrix and polyester matrix had the highest maximum shear strengths, namely: 24.99 MPa and 22.58 MPa. Pure resin and polyester have the lowest maximum shear strain of 0.133 rad and 0.096 rad. Specimens with a fiber volume fraction of 0,25 epoxy matrix and polyester matrix had the highest maximum shear strains of 0.817 and 0.739. Keywords: Corn fiber composites, natural fibers, polyester matrix, epoxy matrix, torsion test Selama ini, serat alam terutama rambut jagung belum banyak digunakan di dunia industri. Padahal, akhir-akhir ini para ilmuwan memberikan perhatian yang lebih terhadap material komposit yang ramah lingkungan. Maka dari itu, perlu dianalisis bagaimana kelayakan komposit serat jagung dengan matriks polyester dan epoxy. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghitung tegangan geser maksimum, regangan geser maksimum komposit serat jagung dengan matriks polyester dan epoxy dengan melakukan uji puntir pada beberapa fraksi volume yang berbeda. Penelitian ini akan menggunakan fraksi volume 0,15; 0,20; 0,25; dan 0,30 serat jagung dengan matriks polyester dan epoxy. Komposit dicetak lalu dikeringkan selama 1 hari, kemudian dilakukan proses pengujian puntir. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa resin murni dan polyester murni memiliki kekuatan geser maksimum terendah sebesar 4,07 MPa dan 2,93 MPa. Spesimen dengan fraksi volume serat 0,25 matriks epoxy dan matriks polyester memiliki kekuatan geser maksimum tertinggi yaitu: 24,99 MPa dan 22,58 MPa. Resin dan polyester murni memiliki regangan geser maksimum terendah sebesar 0,133 dan 0,096. Spesimen dengan fraksi volume serat 0,25 matriks epoxy dan matriks polyester memiliki regangan geser maksimum tertinggi yaitu 0,817 dan 0,739.
