Abstract

In today's modern era, human activities make fuel demand even higher. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to have alternative fuels that are environmentally friendly, cheap and safe. Fuel cell is recommended as an alternative energy conversion for fuel transportation and energy sources. The most effective type of fuel cell used is the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). One of the most important ingredients of PEMFC is bipolar plate which serves to conduct electrons and regulate water management, one of the bipolar plates used is aluminum alloy 5052 (Al 5052). It is known that, in addition to electrical energy, PEMFC also produces 313 K - 353 K and water heat, which can cause degradation of the acidic Nafion PEMFC membrane, which can cause the metal to corrode. The environmental simulation of the acid is 0.5 M H2SO4 with a pH of 0.5. Based on the above, corrosion protection is needed, one of which is coating with an inhibitor. The safest inhibitors to use are green inhibitors, because they are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. In this study using arabic gum inhibitors coated on Al 5052 using Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) coating technique. The content of polar atoms such as O, N, S, P in Arabic gum can be naturally adsorbed as well as assisted by electric currents, forming layers that protect metal contacts with the environment. Using the electrochemical method by potentiodynamic polarization, the corrosion rate of Al 5052 87.847 MPY was obtained, after being protected using Arabic gum inhibitors, the optimal value of coating was obtained at 1 gr / L with a 20 minute EPD time the corrosion rate decreased to 6.343 MPY and resulted in 93% efficiency. Kata Kunci: PEMFC, Fuel Cell, Al 5052, Arabic Gum, Electrophoretic Deposition. Di era modern sekarang ini, aktivitas manusia membuat kebutuhan bahan bakar semakin tinggi. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut maka perlu adanya bahan bakar alternatif yang ramah lingkungan, murah dan aman. Fuel cell direkomendasikan sebagai konversi energi alternatif untuk bahan bakar alat transportasi dan sumber energi. Jenis fuel cell yang paling efektif digunakan adalah Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). Salah satu bahan terpenting dari PEMFC adalah bipolar plate yang berfungsi untuk menghantarkan electron dan mengatur manajemen air, salah satu bipolar plate yang dipakai adalah logam aluminium alloy 5052 (Al 5052). Diketahui bahwa, selain energi listrik, PEMFC juga menghasilkan panas 313 K – 353 K dan air, yang dapat menyebabkan terdegradasinya membran Nafion PEMFC yang bersifat asam, sehingga dapat menyebabkan logam tersebut mengalami korosi. Simulasi lingkungan asam tersebut 0,5 M H2SO4 dengan pH 0,5. Berdasarkan hal tersebut di atas perlu dilakukan proteksi terhadap korosi, salah satunya melakukan pelapisan dengan inhibitor. Inhibitor yang paling aman dipakai adalah yang bersifat hijau (green inhibitor), karena bersifat tidak beracun dan ramah lingkungan. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan inhibitor arabic gum yang dilapiskan pada Al 5052 menggunakan teknik pelapisan Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD). Kandungan atom polar seperti O, N, S, P pada arabic gum dapat teradsorpsi secara alami maupun dibantu dengan arus listrik, membentuk lapisan yang melindungi kontak logam dengan lingkungan. Dengan menggunakan metode elektrokimia secara polarisasi potensiodinamik didapatkan laju korosi Al 5052 87,847 MPY, setelah diproteksi menggunakan inhibitor arabic gum diperoleh nilai optimal pada pelapisan sebesar 1 gr/L dengan waktu EPD 20 menit laju korosi menurun menjadi 6,343 MPY dan menghasilkan efisiensi sebesar 93%. Kata Kunci: PEMFC, Fuel Cell, Al 5052, Arabic Gum, Electrophoretic Deposition.
