Abstract

In the industrial world there are various types of materials that used for cutting tool materials, one of the material is carbide. However, in the procurement of carbide materials, the price is expensive and the delivery time is long. These prices and delivery times may in some circumstances not be in proportion to the number of requests for the product requested. Thus, this research is aimed to obtaining machine cutting tools with quality materials and low prices so as to reduce machine maintenance costs. In this research, the material characterization of SKD-11 steel was carried out through a heat treatment process to be used as a substitute material for cutting tools. In this research carried out by heating the material to an austenite temperature of 1040°C with a holding time of 45 minutes and cooled using an oil medium. Then tempering was carried out with temperature variations of 150°C, 200°C, 250°C, 300°C and 350°C. Furthermore that process to find out the results this research carried out the tests of hardness, impact (toughness) and microstructure. The results of the test showed that the highest hardness was obtained after the quenching process, which was 69.8 HRC. Meanwhile, for the tempering heat treatment process, the maximum hardness value was obtained at a tempering temperature of 150˚C, which was 62 HRC. Meanwhile, the lowest hardness value is at a tempering temperature of 300˚C, which is 55.8 HRC. Based on the test results, the impact energy of SKD-11 steel before heat treatment was 0.6 (
