Abstract

Corrosion was found on the flange longeron beam in the forward galley area and the lavatory of the Airbus A330-300 aircraft during C-Check maintenance. The repair procedure states that to maintain airworthiness, corrosion must be removed using blend out and comparison to limitations, if the results of the blend out are still within the allowable damage limits, it is recommended to do flap-peening, to restore the strength of the material close to the original, because the longeron beam is the main structure categorized in the Fatigue Critical Structure. Where this flap-peen treatment is a pre-stress by mashing tungsten carbide balls on the surface of the material to compress the surface of the material. It is stated that the flap-peen treatment provides residual compressive stress, and reduces residual tensile stress which can increase the material's resistance to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. The author is interested in examining the impact of differences in the strength of longeron beam materials (Aluminum 7136 T76511) whose thickness has decreased on the strength of the material structure in the form of maximum tensile strength, hardness, surface roughness, and changes to the mico structure. This research was carried out on samples with a thickness of 1.80mm and 1.65mm and varying RPM which was intended to find the optimal RPM that was closest to the original strength of the material after a reduction in thickness which of course also reduced the strength of the material. Based on several previous studies on the 2xxx series aluminum alloy material, the hardness changes quite proportionally depending on the RPM and the intensity of the flap-peen. The results of this study concluded that flap-peen can restore the strength of the material that has been lost to close to its initial strength, but with excessive flappeen intensity it can result in reduced material strength in the form of maximum load and ultimate tensile strength. In the aluminum sample 7136 T76511, with a thickness below 1.80mm it is recommended to do a flap-peen with an RPM of 2500, and an intensity of 0.0059InN. Prosedur perbaikan menyebutkan bahwa untuk menjaga kelaikudaraan, korosi harus dihilangkan dengan cara dilakukan blendout dan komparasi terhadap limitasi, apabila hasil dari blendout masih didalam limitasi allowable damage, direkomendasikan untuk dilakukan flap-peening, guna mengembalikan kekuatan material mendekati aslinya, karena longeron beam adalah struktur utama yang dikategorikan dalam Fatigue Critical Structure. Dimana perlakuan flap-peen ini adalah sebuah pre-stress dengan cara menumbukkan bola tungsten carbide pada permukaan material untuk memampatkan permukaan material. Disebutkan bahwa perlakuan flap-peen memberikan residual compressive stress, dan mengurangi residual tensile stress yang dapat menambah ketahanan material terhadap fatik dan stress corrosion cracking. Penulis tertarik untuk meneliti dampak perbedaan kekuatan material longeron beam (Aluminium 7136 T76511) yang ketebalannya sudah berkurang terhadap kekuatan struktur material berupa kekuatan tarik maksimum, kekerasan, kekasaran permukaan, dan perubahan terhadap struktur mikonya. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan terhadap sampel dengan ketebalan awal 2,00mm dan dilakukan blendout hingga mencapai ketebalan minimal 1,80mm, dan 1,65mm dan RPM yang bervariasi yang dimaksudkan untuk mencari RPM optimal yang paling mendekati kekuatan orisial material tersebut setelah terjadi pengurangan ketebalan yang tentunya berkuangnya juga kekuatan material tersebut. Berdasarkan bebrapa penelitian yang sebelumnya terjadi pada material aluminium paduan seri 2xxx terjadi perubahan kekerasan yang cukup proporsional bergantung pada RPM dan intensitas daipada flap-peen. Hasil dari penelitian ini disimpulkan bahwa dengan dilakukannya flap-peen dapat mengembalikan kekuatan material yang telah hilang hingga mendekati kekuatan awalnya, namun dengan intensitas flap-peen yang berlebih dapat mengakibatkan semakin berkurangnya kekuatan material yang berupa beban maksimum dan ultimate tensile strengthnya. Pada sampel aluminium 7136 T76511, dengan ketebalan dibawah 1,80mm direkomendasikan melakukan flap-peen dengan RPM 2500, dan intensitas sebesar 0,0059InN.
