Abstract

Green mussels (Perna viridis) are a source of seafood consumed by the Indonesian people with a fairly high percentage. The high consumption rate is followed by a high amount of processing waste in the form of shells that are allowed to accumulate. Generally, waste shells are only used as handicrafts or wall decorations. In this study, green mussel shell waste (Perna viridis) was used as an adsorbent medium to reduce air temperature, besides that it was used to test motorcycle exhaust emissions. The test is carried out by placing the adsorbent in a cool box which is tested on the heater as a heat source with temperature variations in the control heater 80, 100, 150 and motorcycle exhaust gas with variations in engine speed of 2500 rpm, 3900 rpm, 4700 rpm. The test results on the heater show that the green mussel shells have been able to reduce the temperature by ± 20℃ or 35% of the heat source. Furthermore, in testing the exhaust gas of the motor at 4700 rpm with a temperature of 170°C it can bereduced by ± 130℃ or 71.48% of the heat source. In addition, cool box is also able toreduce motorcycle exhaust emissions, especially CO2 by 2,6 %. Thus, green mussel shells can be used as an alternative medium for adsorbents. Key Word: Adsorption, Green Mussel Shell, Wasted Air Temperature, CO2 Kerang hijau (Perna viridis) merupakan sumber makanan laut yang dikonsumsi oleh masyarakat indonesia dengan presentase yang cukup tinggi. Tingginya angka konsumsi diikuti dengan tingginya jumlah hasil sisa pengolahan berupa cangkang kerang yang dibiarkan menumpuk. Umumnya limbah cangkang kerang hanya digunakan sebagai kerajinan tangan atau hiasan dinding. Pada penelitian ini limbah cangkang kerang hijau (Perna viridis) dimanfaatkan sebagai media adsorben untuk mengurangi temperatur udara, selain itu digunakan untuk menguji emisi gas buang sepeda motor. Pengujian dilakukan dengan menempatkan adsorben didalam cool box yang diujikan pada heater sebagai sumber panas dengan variasi temperatur di control heater 80℃, 100℃,150℃ dan gas buang sepeda motor dengan variasi putaran mesin 2500 rpm, 3900 rpm, 4700 rpm. Hasil pengujian pada heater menunjukan cangkang kerang hijau telah mampu mengurangi temperatur sebesar ± 20℃ atau 35% dari sumber panas. Selanjutnya, pada pengujian gas buang motor di 4700 rpm dengan suhu 170°C dapat direduce sebesar ± 130℃ atau 71,48% dari sumber panas. Disamping itu, cool box ini pun mampu mereduce emisi gas buang sepeda motor khususnya CO2 sebesar 2,6%. Dengan demikian cangkang kerang hijau dapat digunakan sebagai media alternatif adsorben.
