Abstract

Nowadays almost all of manufacturing industries are working to improve their productivity and struggling to reduce costs in the production which is actually has an increasing tendency. Expanding markets and innovative marketing strategies have lead to an increased demand in the finish goods. To achieve company goals of lower costs, greater flexibility and increase capacity without significant investment, most of them are starting to streamline their production by application of Lean Manufacturing techniques. This thesis is trying to discuss the back ground of Lean Manufacturing especially as it relates to plastic injection moulding. And also describing Lean Manufacturing techniques used to reduce changeover time in plastic injection moulding. Moreover we try to go deeper in implementing Single Minutes Exchanging of Dies, the concept which introduced by Shigeo Shingo in the end of 1950. The changeover reduction process itself is starting from evaluation of the existing process until developing a new changeover procedure which is more efficient. This SMED method succeed to reduce changeover time by more than 80%, which mean increasing production capacity without additional facilities, no significant capital investment even not giving any negative effect upon quality of product or process. Dewasa ini semua perusahaan manufaktur berusaha untuk meningkatkan produktifitas serta disaat bersamaan berupaya menekan biaya produksi yang semakin meningkat. Perluasan pasar dan strategi pemasaran yang inovatif telah berhasil meningkatkan permintaan (demand) akan produk mereka. Untuk bisa mencapai tujuan perusahaan yaitu; biaya produksi yang rendah, fleksibilitas produksi yang tinggi, dan peningkatan kapasitas produksi tanpa investasi yang significant, banyak perusahaan yang berusaha untuk merampingkan operasi mereka dengan jalan mengimplementasikan teknik- teknik Lean Manufacturing. Karya tulis ini membahas latar belakang Lean Manufacturing terutama yang berkaitan dengan industri manufaktur plastic (Plastic Injection moulding). Penulis mencoba menjabarkan teknik/metode Lean Manufacturing yang digunakan untuk mengurangi waktu pergantian alat (Changeover time) dalam industri plastic injection moulding. Konsep yang penulis terapkan adalah Single Minutes Exchanging of Dies (SMED), yang diperkenalkan oleh Shigeo Shingo pada akhit tahun 1950an. Proses ini meliputi kegiatan mengevaluasi proses yang ada sebelumnya sampai dengan mengembangkan prosedur baru untuk pelaksanaan changeover yang lebih efisien. Metode SMED ini berhasil menurunkan lebih dari 80% waktu setup, yang pada gilirannya meningkatkan kapasitas produksi tanpa penambahan fasilitas, investasi baru, serta tidak menimbukan efek negatif terhadap kualitas produk ataupun kualitas proses produksi.
