Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between selfcontrol and intensity of Instagram use among early adulthood students at Mercu Buana University, Jakarta. Self-control is the individual's ability to ignore or change inner reactions, either stop unwanted behavior or refrain from acting in this way with a valid 20 item scale. Intensity is a description of how long and often individuals use Instagram with various purposes or motivations with a scale of 2 items and 1 additional item. Samples in this research were 271 students of early adulthood who have active Instagram accounts who were selected using purposive sampling technique. The results of the study using the Spearman-Rho correlation showed that there was a significant negative relationship between selfcontrol and the intensity of using Instagram in students, which obtained a Cronbach's Alpha value - 0.495 and a significance of 0.000, which means that the higher the intensity of using Instagram, the lower the self-control. Keywords : Self Control , Intensity , Instagram Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan kontrol diri dengan intensitas penggunaan Instagram pada mahasiswa usia dewasa awal Universitas Mercu Buana Jakarta . Kontrol diri merupakan kemampuan individu untuk mengesampingkan atau mengubah reaksi batin, baik menghentikan perilaku yang tidak diinginkan maupun menahan diri untuk tidak bertindak demikian dengan skala 20 item valid. Intensitas adalah gambaran berapa lama dan sering individu menggunakan Instagram dengan berbagai tujuan atau motivasi dengan skala 2 item dan 1 item tambahan. Jumlah sampel pada penelitian ini adalah 271 mahasiswa usia dewasa awal yang mempunyai akun aktif Instagram yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Hasil penelitian menggunakan korelasi Spearman-Rho menunjukkan ada hubungan negatif yang signifikan antara kontrol diri dengan intensitas penggunaan Instagram pada mahasiswa diperolehnya nilai Cronbach’s Alpha – 0,495 dan signifikansi sebesar 0,000 yang artinya semakin tinggi intensitas penggunaan Instagram maka akan semakin rendah kontrol diri.
