Abstract

Fuel cells are devices that use hydrogen as fuel to produce electrons, protons, heat and water. Fuel cells are promising candidates as zero-emission electricity sources because they work at low operating temperatures of between 60-80oC, high-power high-density efficiency, and good durability systems. Metals have good mechanical and electrical conductivity. Aluminum 5052 (Al 5052) is one of the metals used in the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) bipolar plate. Al 5052 metal has corrosion resistance because it has an oxide layer that inhibits corrosion reactions, but this layer will disappear along with a highly corrosive environment and increased temperature. Inorganic inhibitors such as chromate and arsenic can be used to inhibit the corrosion process, but their use can damage the environment. In this study, environmentally friendly chitosan organic inhibitors will be used. Test in a simulated environment of 0.5 M H2SO4 sulfuric acid. The use of chitosan as an inhibitor of Al 5052 metal corrosion using electrodeposition (EPD) technique. In the sample Al 5052 without an inhibitor layer it has a corrosion rate of 23.707 mpy and a resistance of 0.6 Ω. With the electrodeposition process for 20 minutes, the voltage of 8 volts and current 1.5 A obtained the best corrosion rate on the coated 5052 Al 5052 metal with a concentration of 1 gr / l which was equal to 0.19376 mpy, the inhibitor efficiency was 99.18% and resistance was 1, 2 Ω. Based on the potentiodynamic polarization test, chitosan inhibitors are mixed with protection dominant in the cathodic region. Based on SEM-EDX testing of Al 5052 metal, it showed a predominance of Al-element mass of 85.08% and Mg elemental mass of 4.76%. After electrodeposition (EPD) was carried out using chitosan inhibitors, the elemental mass of Al was 8.56% and there were mass elements C and O which indicated adsorption of chitosan adsorbed on the metal surface of Al 5052. Keywords: Al 5052, corrosion, inhibitors, chitosan, electrodeposition technique, SemEdx Sel bahan bakar merupakan suatu perangkat yang menggunakan hidrogen sebagai bahan bakar untuk menghasilkan elektron, proton, panas dan air. Sel bahan bakar merupakan kandidat yang menjanjikan sebagai nol-emisi sumber listrik karena bekerja pada tempertaur operasi yang rendah yaitu antara 60-80oC, efisiensi tinggi kerapatan daya tinggi, dan sistem ketahanan yang baik. Logam memiliki sifat mekanik dan konduktivitas listrik yang baik. Aluminium 5052 (Al 5052) merupakan salah satu logam yang digunakan pada pelat bipolar Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). Logam Al 5052 memiliki ketahanan terhadap korosi karena memiliki lapisan oksida yang menghambat reaksi korosi, namun lapisan ini akan hilang seiring pada lingkungan yang sangat korosif dan meningkatnya temperatur. Inhibitor anorganik seperti kromat dan arsenik dapat digunakan untuk menghambat proses korosi, namun penggunaanya dapat merusak lingkungan. Pada penelitian ini akan digunakan inhibitor organik kitosan yang ramah lingkungan. Pengujian di lingkungan simulasi asam sulfat 0,5 M H2SO4. Penggunaan kitosan sebagai inhibitor korosi logam Al 5052 menggunakan teknik elektrodeposisi (EPD). Pada sampel Al 5052 tanpa lapisan inhibitor memiliki laju korosi 23,707 mpy dan resistansi sebesar 0,6 Ω . Dengan proses elektrodeposisi selama 20 menit, tegangan 8 volt dan arus 1.5 A didapatkan laju korosi terbaik pada logam Al 5052 terlapis inhibitor kitosan dengan konsentrasi 1 gr/l yaitu sebesar 0,19376 mpy, efisiensi inhibitor sebesar 99,18 % dan resistansi sebesar 1,2 Ω. Berdasarkan uji polarisasi potensiodinamik, inhibitor kitosan bersifat campuran dengan proteksi dominan di daerah katodik. Berdasarkan pengujian SEM-EDX logam Al 5052, menunjukan dominasi masa unsur Al sebesar 85,08 % dan massa unsur Mg sebesar 4,76 %. Setelah dilakukan proses elektrodeposisi (EPD) menggunakan inhibitor kitosan, massa unsur Al menjadi 8,56 % serta terdapat massa unsur C dan O yang menandakan inhibitor kitosan teradsorpsi pada permukaan logam Al 5052.
