Abstract

Aluminum alloy 5052 (Al 5052) is pure aluminum with elements of Mg 2.2 - 2.8%, Cu 0.1%, Mg 0.1%, Cr 0.15%, Zn 0.1%, Si and Fe 0.45% (Bhowmik, 2016). The advantages of Al 5052 are high conductivity, high tensile resistance, easy to form and a mass that is 65% lighter than steel (Chiang, 2014), and is one of the metals used in bipolar plate Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC). It is known that, in addition to electrical energy, PEMFC also produces heat of 313 - 353 K and water, which can cause degradation of Nafion acid membranes, which increases the risk of bipolar plates on the corroded side of PEMFC cathodes. The simulation of the acid environment is 0.5 M H2SO4 with a pH of 1-4 (Yang, 2011). Therefore need a control for corrosion damage reduce. Electrodeposition (EPD) is a principled material processing technique on precipitation, forms a layer that protects metal in direct contact with the corrosive environment (Besra, 2007; Pratiwi, 2016). In this study the precipitating agent used for electrophoretic deposition of Arabic gum organic compounds which has polar atomic content of O, N, S which can form layers protects metal with the environment. Corrosion rate calculation method uses weight loss and electrochemistry. The results of the tests, coating of Gum arabic with EPD technique can reduce the corrosion rate of Al 5052 immersion for 168 hours in an environment of 0.5 M H2SO4 inhibitor eficiency 60% and the best EPD 20 minutes. While the effect of temperature 353 K on the environment of 0.5 M H2SO4 inhibitor efficiency is 14.4% and the orther results of potentiodynamic polarization show that Arabic gum inhibitors are cathodic inhibitors because they reduce metal Icorr and decrease the value of Ecorr. The decrease in efficiency of Arabic gum inhibitors as temperature increases indicates that inhibitors are Physical. Keyword: Aluminium alloy 5052, corrosion rate, arabic gum, electrophoretic deposition, pemfc. 2,2 – 2,8%, Cu 0,1%, Mg 0,1%, Cr 0,15%, Zn 0,1%, Si dan Fe 0,45% (Bhowmik, 2016). Kelebihan Al 5052 konduktivitas tinggi, ketahahan tarik tinggi, mudah bentuk dan massa yang ringan 65% dari baja (Chiang, 2014). Dan merupakan salah satu logam yang digunakan pada pelat bipolar Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). Diketahui bahwa, selain energi listrik, PEMFC juga menghasilkan panas 313 K – 353 K dan air, yang dapat menyebabkan terdegradasinya membran Nafion PEMFC yang bersifat asam sehingga meningkatkan resiko Al 5052 pelat bipolar sisi katoda PEMFC terkorosi. Simulasi lingkungan asam tersebut 0,5 M H2SO4 dengan pH 1-4 (Yang, 2011). Oleh karena itu dibutuhkan suatu pengendalian agar kerusakan akibat korosi dapat dikendalikan. Elektrodeposisi (EPD) adalah teknik pemrosesan material yang berprinsip pada pengendapan, dimana endapan tersebut membentuk lapisan yang melindungi logam kontak langsung dengan lingkungan korosif (Besra, 2007; Pratiwi, 2016). Pada penelitian ini zat pengendap yang digunakan untuk proses elektrodeposisi senyawa organik Arabic gum yang memiliki kandungan atom polar O, N, S dan P yang dapat membentuk lapisan melindungi logam dengan lingkungan. Metode perhitungan laju korosi menggunakan kehilangan berat (weight loss) dan elektrokimia. Dari hasil pengujian yang telah dilakukan, pelapisan Arabic gum dengan teknik EPD dapat mengurangi laju korosi Al 5052 yang direndam selama 168 jam dilingkungan 0,5 M H2SO4 efisiensi inhibitor sebesar 60%, dengan waktu terbaik EPD 20 menit. Sedangkan pengaruh temperatur dilingkungan 0,5 M H2SO4 efisiensi inhibitor 14,4%. Adapun hasil polarisasi potensiodinamik menunjukan bahwa inhibitor Arabic gum bersifat inhibitor katodik karena menurunkan Icorr logam dan menurunkan nilai Ecorr. Penurunan efisiensi inhibitor Arabic gum seiring meningkatnya temperatur menandakan inhibitor bersifat Fisisorpsi. Kata kunci: Aluminium alloy 5052, laju korosi, arabic gum, elektrodeposisi, pmfc
