Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of welding current variation on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) joints on SS400 low-carbon steel using E-7016 electrodes. The mechanical properties evaluated include tensile strength and Vickers hardness, while the microstructure was observed in the Base Metal (BM), Heat Affected Zone (HAZ), and Weld Metal (WM) regions. The welding current variations used in this study were 70 A, 100 A, and 120 A. The research methods consisted of tensile testing, Vickers hardness testing, and optical microstructure observation to evaluate the effect of welding current on weld joint quality. The results showed that welding current variation significantly affected the mechanical properties and microstructure of the welded joints. The 100 A welding current produced the highest average tensile strength of 513 MPa, while the 70 A and 120 A currents produced average tensile strengths of 478 MPa and 469.67 MPa, respectively. The Vickers hardness test indicated that the 120 A welding current resulted in the highest average hardness value of 214.5 HV. Microstructural observations revealed that all specimens were predominantly composed of ferrite as the primary phase and pearlite as the secondary phase in the BM, HAZ, and WM regions. Based on the experimental results, the 100 A welding current was identified as the optimum welding parameter in terms of tensile strength, whereas the 120 A welding current provided the highest hardness. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for selecting appropriate SMAW welding current parameters for SS400 steel to achieve high-quality welded joints. Variasi arus 100 A menghasilkan kekuatan tarik rata-rata tertinggi sebesar 513 MPa, sedangkan variasi arus 70 A dan 120 A masing-masing sebesar 478 MPa dan 469,67 MPa.
