Abstract

The increasing emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂) has become one of the primary contributors to global warming, creating a growing need for effective and economical adsorbent materials. This study aimed to synthesize Zeolite-Y from Kasongan clay, Yogyakarta, using the Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal (MAH) method and to evaluate its characteristics and effectiveness as a CO₂ adsorbent. The synthesis process involved clay preparation, NaOH activation, microwave heating, hydrothermal crystallization, washing, and drying. The synthesized material was characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). CO₂ adsorption tests were conducted using adsorbent masses of 2, 3, and 4 g, flow rates of 5, 10, and 15 L/min, and contact times of 2, 3, and 4 min. The characterization results showed that the MAH synthesis altered the XRD diffraction pattern, as indicated by the appearance of a new diffraction peak at 2θ = 24.35° and the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate phase as an intermediate toward Zeolite-Y formation. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of characteristic aluminosilicate bonds, including Si–O–Si, Si–O–Al, and the Double Six Ring (D6R), which is a characteristic feature of the Faujasite (FAU) framework. SEM-EDS analysis revealed the predominance of Na, Si, Al, and O as the principal framework elements of the synthesized zeolite. The highest CO₂ adsorption efficiency reached 60.23% using 4 g of adsorbent, a 15 L/min flow rate, and a 4 min contact time. These findings demonstrate that the Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal (MAH) method successfully produced Kasongan clay-based Zeolite-Y with promising potential as a CO₂ adsorbent. Keywords: Zeolite-Y, Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal (MAH), Kasongan clay, CO₂ adsorption, XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS.
