Abstract

Aluminum 6061 is widely used in the shipbuilding and marine transportation industries due to its lightweight nature, strength, and good corrosion resistance. However, the material remains susceptible to pitting corrosion when exposed to environments containing chloride ions (Cl⁻), such as seawater. Corrosion processes can degrade material quality and increase maintenance and component replacement costs. Although synthetic chemical-based corrosion inhibitors have proven effective, their use can have negative impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, there is a need for more environmentally friendly inhibitor alternatives, such as natural extracts. This study aims to analyze the corrosion rate of Aluminum 6061 both without an inhibitor and with the addition of a "green inhibitor" in the form of turmeric extract in an NaCl medium using the Salt Spray Test method. Testing was conducted based on the weight loss method with exposure times of 0, 72, 120, 168, and 336 hours. The green inhibitor was prepared by mixing turmeric extract and butyl acrylate in a 1:1 ratio. Additionally, surface morphology was examined using a Scanning Auger Microscope (SAM) to evaluate surface changes and damage following the tests. The results indicate that Aluminum 6061 without an inhibitor experienced an increase in corrosion rate as exposure time increased; the average corrosion rate rose from 0.0139 mg/cm²·h at 72 hours to 0.0163 mg/cm²·h at 336 hours. The addition of the turmeric extract green inhibitor successfully reduced the corrosion rate, achieving a minimum rate of 0.0060 mg/cm²·h at 72 hours and an inhibition efficiency of 56.8%. Surface morphology observations revealed that samples without the inhibitor suffered more severe damage characterized by the formation of corrosion products, cracks, and surface irregularities whereas samples treated with the inhibitor exhibited superior surface protection. Based on the findings of this study, turmeric extract has the potential to be used as an eco-friendly "green inhibitor" to enhance the corrosion resistance of Aluminum 6061 in an NaCl environment.. Keywords: Aluminum 6061, Green inhibitor, Corrosion, Salt spray test, SAM Aluminium 6061 banyak digunakan pada industri perkapalan dan transportasi laut karena memiliki sifat ringan, kuat, serta ketahanan korosi yang baik. Namun, material ini tetap rentan mengalami korosi pitting akibat paparan lingkungan yang mengandung ion klorida (Cl⁻), seperti air laut. Proses korosi dapat menurunkan kualitas material dan meningkatkan biaya perawatan maupun penggantian komponen. Penggunaan inhibitor berbasis bahan kimia sintetis sebagai metode perlindungan korosi memiliki efektivitas yang baik, tetapi dapat memberikan dampak negatif terhadap lingkungan dan kesehatan. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan alternatif inhibitor yang lebih ramah lingkungan, salah satunya menggunakan ekstrak alami. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis laju korosi Aluminium 6061 tanpa inhibitor dan dengan penambahan green inhibitor ekstrak kunyit dalam media NaCl menggunakan metode Salt Spray Test. Pengujian dilakukan berdasarkan metode kehilangan massa (weight loss) pada variasi waktu paparan 0, 72, 120, 168, dan 336 jam. Green inhibitor dibuat dari ekstrak kunyit yang dicampurkan dengan butyl acrylate dengan perbandingan (1:1). Selain itu, pengamatan morfologi permukaan dilakukan menggunakan Scanning Auger Microscope (SAM) untuk mengetahui perubahan dan kerusakan permukaan material setelah pengujian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Aluminium 6061 tanpa inhibitor mengalami peningkatan laju korosi seiring bertambahnya waktu paparan. Nilai rata-rata laju korosi meningkat dari 0,0139 mg/cm².jam pada waktu 72 jam menjadi 0,0163 mg/cm².jam pada waktu 336 jam. Penambahan green inhibitor ekstrak kunyit mampu menurunkan laju korosi dengan nilai terendah sebesar 0,0060 mg/cm².jam pada waktu pengujian 72 jam dan menghasilkan efisiensi inhibisi sebesar 56,8%. Hasil pengamatan morfologi permukaan menunjukkan bahwa sampel tanpa inhibitor mengalami kerusakan lebih besar berupa pembentukan produk korosi, retakan, dan ketidakhomogenan permukaan, sedangkan sampel dengan inhibitor memiliki permukaan yang lebih terlindungi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian tersebut, ekstrak kunyit berpotensi digunakan sebagai green inhibitor yang ramah lingkungan untuk meningkatkan ketahanan korosi Aluminium 6061 pada lingkungan NaCl.
