Abstract
pH is essential in clinical diagnosis and water quality monitoring. Glass electrodes are fragile, require continuous hydration, and are susceptible to biofouling. This study optimized a polypyrrole (PPy)-coated carbon fiber microelectrode (CFME) pH sensor using the Taguchi method and analyzed morphology and mass transport through SEM and ANSYS Fluent CFD simulations. Electropolymerization was optimized using an L9 Orthogonal Array with three replications, covering pyrrole concentration, KCl concentration, scan rate, and number of cycles. Evaluation used the Nominal-the-Best Signal-to-Noise ratio and ANOVA with a Nernstian target of -59.16 mV/pH. The optimum combination comprised 0.5 M pyrrole, 1 M KCl, a 50 mV/s scan rate, and 1 cycle. The highest S/N ratio was -23.55 dB. This combination produced a slope of -44.12 mV/pH, while confirmation experiments produced - 44.49 mV/pH with 0.83% error. Conditioning pyrrole at pH 6 improved the slope to -52.64 mV/pH and produced a more uniform PPy layer. KCl was the dominant factor, contributing 59.89%. Cycles, scan rate, and pyrrole contributed 4.76%, 0.99%, and 0.86%, respectively, while error contribution reached 33.51%. CFD simulations showed laminar flow and transient species transport, with equilibrium occurring at 7 and 11 seconds. These findings support the development of responsive and reliable portable pH sensors. Keywords: potentiometric pH sensor, CFME, polypyrrole, Taguchi method, ANSYS Fluent pH merupakan parameter penting dalam diagnosis klinis dan pemantauan kualitas air.
