Abstract

The increasing use of smartphones among adolescents increases the risk of smartphone addiction, which can impact academic, psychological, social, and health aspects. One of the internal factors suspected to play a role in controlling excessive smartphone use is self-control. Based on this phenomenon, this study aims to determine the effect of self-control on smartphone addiction in grade XI students of SMK X. This study uses a quantitative approach with a predictive correlational design. The study population was 270 grade XI students of SMK X with a sample of 160 students selected using a simple random sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) developed by Kwon et al. (2013) to measure smartphone addiction and the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) developed by Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone (2004) to measure selfcontrol. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that self-control had a negative and significant effect on smartphone addiction (B = - 2.183; p < 0.001) with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.405. These results indicate that self-control contributes 40.5% to the variation in smartphone addiction. Therefore, the higher a student's self-control, the lower their smartphone addiction. Therefore, self-control is a factor that plays a role in reducing the tendency for smartphone addiction in 11th-grade students at SMK X. Keywords: self-control, smartphone addiction, vocational school students, teenagers.
