Abstract
The transformation of informal settlements into vertical housing through kampung susun programs is often understood primarily as a physical solution to urban housing problems. However, such transformations also generate significant social and cultural implications for residents’ ways of dwelling. This study aims to examine changes in dwelling culture following the relocation from an informal settlement to Kampung Susun Kunir and to analyze the role of participatory design in shaping sense of place and the continuity of neighborhood life (Gemeinschaft). This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method in Kampung Susun Kunir, Jakarta. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 30 respondents who were original residents of Kampung Kunir, field observations, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted through axial coding and selective coding by relating empirical findings to Amos Rapoport’s theories of dwelling culture (1969; 1990), Habraken’s concept of housing control (1983), sense of place theory, and the concepts of Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. The findings reveal that changes in dwelling culture do not occur in a linear or deterministic manner as a result of physical transformation alone. Instead, they emerge through adaptive and negotiated processes between physical space, social practices, and residents’ value systems. Shared spaces such as galleries, front corridors, and ground floors play a crucial role in sustaining social interaction and neighborhood cohesion. Selective coding identifies sense of place as the core category linking neighborhood life, social interaction spaces, and residential floor configurations. Furthermore, characteristics of Gemeinschaft persist through intergenerational interactions and collective adaptation to vertical housing. This study concludes that participatory design plays a strategic role in fostering sense of place and sustaining social relations in post-relocation vertical housing. The findings contribute theoretically to the discourse on dwelling culture and sense of place in vertical housing contexts and offer practical implications for the planning and design of kampung susun that are more socially and culturally responsive. Namun, perubahan tersebut juga membawa implikasi sosial dan budaya yang signifikan terhadap cara bermukim masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji perubahan budaya bermukim pascarelokasi dari kampung kumuh ke Kampung Susun Kunir serta menganalisis peranan desain partisipatif dalam membentuk sense of place dan keberlanjutan kehidupan bertetangga (Gemeinschaft). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus di Kampung Susun Kunir, Jakarta. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap 30 responden yang merupakan penghuni asli Kampung Kunir, observasi lapangan, serta telaah dokumen perencanaan. Analisis data dilakukan secara bertahap melalui axial coding dan selective coding dengan mengaitkan temuan lapangan pada teori budaya bermukim Amos Rapoport (1969; 1990), konsep kontrol hunian Habraken (1983), teori sense of place, serta konsep Gemeinschaft dan Gesellschaft. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perubahan budaya bermukim tidak berlangsung secara linier akibat perubahan bentuk hunian, melainkan melalui proses adaptasi dan negosiasi antara ruang fisik, praktik sosial, dan sistem nilai penghuni. Ruang-ruang bersama seperti galeri, koridor depan unit, dan lantai dasar berperan penting dalam menjaga keberlanjutan interaksi sosial dan kehidupan bertetangga. Selective coding mengidentifikasi sense of place sebagai kategori inti yang menghubungkan kehidupan bertetangga, tempat interaksi sosial, dan konfigurasi lantai hunian. Selain itu, karakteristik Gemeinschaft tetap bertahan melalui interaksi lintas usia dan adaptasi kolektif warga terhadap hunian vertikal. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa desain partisipatif memiliki peranan strategis dalam mendukung pembentukan sense of place dan keberlanjutan relasi sosial pada hunian vertikal pascarelokasi. Temuan ini memberikan kontribusi teoretis dalam pengayaan kajian budaya bermukim dan sense of place dalam konteks hunian vertikal, serta implikasi praktis bagi perencanaan kampung susun yang lebih peka terhadap dimensi sosial dan budaya.
