Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between alexithymia and altruism among early adults in Indonesia. Alexithymia refers to a condition in which individuals experience difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions, while altruism denotes voluntary helping behavior performed without expecting any rewards. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 210 early adults selected using accidental sampling. The instruments used were the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20) and the Generative Altruism Scale (GALS). Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation after meeting the assumption of normality. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between alexithymia and altruism (r = 0.175; p = 0.011), with the strength of the relationship categorized as very weak. Further analysis of altruism dimensions showed that direct helping behavior and self-sacrificial altruism had higher correlations with aspects of alexithymia, whereas helping intention demonstrated a low or non-significant relationship. These findings indicate that despite limitations in emotional processing, early adults are still capable of exhibiting prosocial behavior, which may be influenced by cognitive factors and social norms.
