Abstract

In this modern era, especially students in the Mercubuana University use social media, one of which is the Japanese Language community at the Mercubuana University that uses online social media as a means to communicate. By utilizing the features found on social media Line, online community members use it as a form of communication. The theory used in this research is Mass Communication and new media theory where community members can receive and send messages to all group members without being hindered by space and time, and seeing the similarity of members with the characteristics of new media with the use of social media online as a means of communication. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive type. The method used is primary data, which is conducting observations and in-depth interviews with resource persons, and secondary data where researchers interview indirectly in the form of notes from members. Based on the results of community members' research Japanese language uses interactivity, social presence experienced by users, the wealth of media where media reach can bridge different reference frames, and uses for entertainment and pleasure from the seven characteristics of new media.
