Abstract

This research discusses how the meaning of the traditional dance cultural exchange program for Color of Indonesia participants in 2017–2019 at the junior, high school, and tertiary education levels. The difference between this study and other research is in the phenomenon being studied, which is related to the way each participant expresses meaning based on their perceptions and experiences. There are two theories that researchers use in this research, namely the theory of symbolic interaction with the perspective of the Herbert Blumer school of thought and the theory of perception. This type of research is descriptive with a qualitative approach and uses phenomenological methods by collecting data using in-depth interview techniques and the researcher acting as participating observation. As a result, junior high school students interpreted the traditional dance cultural exchange program as motivation to learn traditional dance so they could be re-involved in similar cultural exchange programs, high school students interpreted it as a way to introduce Indonesia's diverse cultural traditions and exchange cultures with participants. from various countries, while participants in Higher Education interpreted it as a form of moral responsibility to be actively involved in promoting Indonesian culture abroad. Keywords: meaning, cultural exchange program, traditional dance Penelitian ini membahas tentang bagaimana pemaknaan program pertukaran budaya seni tari tradisional bagi peserta Color of Indonesia tahun 2017–2019 di tingkat pelajar SMP, SMA, dan Perguruan Tinggi. Perbedaan penelitian ini dengan penelitian lainnya ada pada fenomena yang dikaji yakni berkaitan dengan cara masing-masing peserta mengungkap makna berdasarkan persepsi dan pengalaman yang mereka alami. Terdapat dua teori yang peneliti gunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu teori interaksi simbolik dengan perspektif mazhab Herbert Blumer dan teori persepsi. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan menggunakan metode fenomenologi dengan pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik wawancara mendalam dan peneliti bertindak sebagai observasi berpartisipasi. Hasilnya, peserta pelajar tingkat SMP memaknai program pertukaran budaya seni tari tradisional sebagai motivasi untuk mempelajari seni tari tradisional agar dapat terlibat kembali dalam program pertukaran budaya sejenis, peserta pelajar tingkat SMA memaknainya sebagai cara untuk mengenalkan tradisi budaya Indonesia yang beragam dan saling bertukar budaya dengan peserta dari berbagai negara, sedangkan peserta mahasiswa Perguruan Tinggi memaknainya sebagai bentuk tanggung jawab moral untuk terlibat aktif dalam mempromosikan budaya Indonesia di luar negeri.
