Abstract

This study aims to see whether there is a relationship between active social media engagement with peers on negative body image among young girls using Instagram. The number of subjects in this study were 170 young women aged 12- 18 years in the city of Tangerang. Measuring tools used in this study are McCay- Peet & Quan-Haase's (2016) active social media engagement measurement tool, and cash negative body image measurement tools (in Jones, 2001). After the researchers tested the validity first on the two measuring instruments, each has a reliability value of 0.935 from the active social media engagement variable and 0.959 from the negative body image variable. The results of this study indicate a sig value of 0,000; p <0.005, which means that the Alternative Hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted, meaning: There is a relationship between active social media engagement with peers on negative body image among young girls using Instagram. The correlation value on the two variables is 0.651 which means it is included in the strong correlation category and the relationship shows a positive direction, where the more frequent (high) young women active social media engagement, the more they affect (high) the negative body image of the young women, and vice versa, the rarer (low) young women active social media engagement, the less influence (low) the negative body image of these girls. Keywords: active social media engagement, negative body image Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada hubungan active social media engagement bersama teman sebaya terhadap body image negatif pada remaja putri pengguna instagram. Jumlah subjek dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 170 remaja putri usia 12 – 18 tahun di kota Tangerang. Alat ukur yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah alat ukur active social media engagement McCay-Peet & Quan-Haase (2016), dan alat ukur body image negatif Cash (dalam Jones, 2001). Setelah peneliti melakukan uji validitas terlebih dahulu pada kedua alat ukur tersebut, masing – masing memiliki nilai reliabilitas sebesar 0,935 dari variabel active social media engagement dan 0,959 dari variabel body image negatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan nilai sig 0,000 ; p < 0,005 yang mana berarti Hipotesis Alternatif (Hₐ) diterima artinya: Ada hubungan active social media engagement bersama teman sebaya terhadap body image negatif pada remaja putri pengguna instagram. Nilai korelasi pada kedua variabel sebesar 0,651 yang berarti termasuk didalam kategori korelasi kuat dan hubungan tersebut menunjukkan kearah positif, dimana semakin sering (tinggi) remaja putri active social media engagement maka semakin mempengaruhi (tinggi) body image negatif remaja putri tersebut, dan sebaliknya semakin jarang (rendah) remaja putri active social media engagement maka semakin tidak mempengaruhi (rendah) body image negatif remaja putri tersebut.
